Auxiliary GIS
Our mission is to provide high-quality GIS services to the campus community. In collaboration with our university partners, our commitment to providing quality and relevant geospatial data to stakeholders in a variety of consumable forms helps to sustain and further the overall mission of the University of Utah by enhancing the campus experience for staff, students, faculty, and visitors.
What Is GIS?
In short, GIS is a field tasked with curating and visualizing location-based datasets for stakeholders. GIS specialists develop, analyze, maintain, and map data, and stakeholders can consume this data through map products, imagery, etc.

Our team creates static and interactive map products to help visualize data relevant to campus operations. These products promote a stronger understanding of “where”, and subsequently answer a broad range of questions impacting the campus community, from parking availability, to ADA accessibility, to construction impacts on a growing campus.
In collaboration with our partners, Auxiliary GIS has created a number of interactive map products for stakeholders, including:
- U Permit Availability After 3PM
- Transportation Markings and Signage Inventory
- Sunnyside Apartment Community Garden Plots
- Bicycle Infrastructure Project Tracker
If you have an idea for a static or interactive map you’d like created for your team, please contact us.
-
Before a map can be created, a robust and accurate dataset supporting that map has to exist or be developed. Our team creates geospatial datasets for university stakeholders, and offers consulting on how to embed the ongoing maintenance of these datasets into stakeholder workflows.
In collaboration with our partners, Auxiliary GIS has created and helped to maintain a number of geospatial datasets for stakeholders. If you have data you’d like to see integrated into GIS, please contact us.
-
Our team utilizes a small fleet of drones to provide imagery solutions to university stakeholders for a variety of purposes, ranging from long-term data collection projects to time lapse videography.
Auxiliary GIS routinely conducts drone flights to obtain video and imagery. Past and ongoing work includes:
- Time-lapse videography of long-term construction projects
- Aerial mapping for geospatial dataset updates
- Long-term multi-day flights to collect data related to parking occupancy
- 3D panoramic imagery to aid in proposed project renderings
- Videography and still photo for student projects in the Department of Geography
Does your team have a need for drone services, or a questions about licensing? Contact us.
